It will depend on your vehicle. Some vehicles with cable-operated clutches have an adjustment nut that lets you make minor adjustments to the pedal engagement point. However, hydraulic clutches typically self-adjust, and modifying them without proper knowledge can cause damage. If you’re unsure, it’s best to consult a mechanic.

Stop-and-go traffic requires frequent clutch engagement and disengagement, which generates heat and wear on the clutch disc and pressure plate. Highway driving, with fewer frequent gear changes, puts far less stress on the clutch. Only use the clutch when necessary to keep it from degrading quickly.

A contaminated or warped clutch disc, a worn flywheel surface, or a failing engine or transmission mount often causes clutch chatter or judder. While it may not be immediately catastrophic, it’s still a problem that needs your attention. Leaving it unresolved can cause more damage and eventually require a full clutch replacement.
